Nestos river is 230 km long, most of it flowing in Greece with its river mouth
reaching the Thracian sea.
Its source is in
the Rila mountain range,
This short dam is located at
the narrowest point of the valley and consequently,
could be elevated in concrete.
At the time of its construction, the dam technology used
was considered innovative because it used the ashes from thermal power stations of Ptolemaida valley
as base of the cement bond, thus achieving economic and some environmental benefits.
Its height is 95 meters
and dam volume
450,000 cubic meters.
