This is the story of
a restoration of a lake.
Carla is the only lake
in the plain of Thessaly,
in the Pineios river basin,
at the foot of
Mavrovouni mountain,
in Greece.
The 180 sq km lake was completely drained in 1962
to gain agricultural land.
It was a site of unique fishermen culture
and a migratory stop over
for birds.
The negative impacts
of the ecosystem changes
were greater than the benefits of agricultural exploitation, which were never really achieved due to
the saline soils of the lake.
Pumping water into the lake
from Pineios river
was carried out.
Today, migratory birds are visiting again.
