The amphibian alpine newt (Triturus alpestris)
of the salamander order Candate,
is widespread in both
alpine and lowland habitats
including wet,
shaded coniferous,
mixed and deciduous forests,
sub alpine meadows and pastureland.

It breeds,
and larval development
takes place in all
stagnant waters.

After adults come out
of winter dormancy,
they migrate to
spawning pools.
